The problem with using the 'out-the-box' SMS
Installation and Discovery methods is that they can sometimes be a bit 'hit
and miss'. This is where CIS comes into play. You simply install
the client component on those machines you want to become SMS clients
(through the logon script, Group Policy, etc.).
Once the client component is installed it simply retrieves information about
the client computer and sends this back to the CIS Server component.
The server component then determines which SMS Site the client should belong
to and instructs the relevant Site Server to install the client software.
Simple.
Why use CIS? The big benefit of CIS is you keep control. You
decide what systems become clients and when rather than enabling a
Discovery/ Installation method and then leaving everything to chance.
