Being able to distribute software to a large
number of users in a consistent manner is one of the great features of a
tool such as SMS but things start to go a bit screwy when it comes to
distributing large packages to those users that don’t have the benefit of a
LAN/ WAN connection to your infrastructure (dialup users being a prime
example).
'Out-of-the-box' when you distribute software via SMS the SMS
Client receives the Advertisement and then it goes off to the Distribution
Point to retrieve and install the software. But what happens if the
installation gets part way through and the connection drops, or the user
decides to disconnect from the network/ shutdown the machine?
This is where SMSNomad comes in. SMSNomad is a product that is integrated
with the SMS Client. When the client receives the Advertisement SMSNomad
ensures all of the software that is required in order to install a
particular application are downloaded locally to the client BEFORE the
installation starts. If the connection drops out or the user decides to
disconnect from the network/ shutdown the machine no problem as SMSNomad
will continue the process from where it was interrupted (using checkpoint
restart), the next time the machine is powered on/ the connection is
resumed.
In addition SMSNomad provides intelligent bandwidth throttling to
ensure that the software installation doesn’t hog the network connection and
prevent the user from working. To find out more on SMSNomad goto:
