This is my favourite piece of 1E software and the
product that got them on the map. Probably THE biggest pain when it comes to
using any software management tool such as SMS is Software Distribution.
Although distributing software via a tool such as SMS is a Godsend it does
have it's problems. For example most companies choose to deploy their software
'out-of-hours'. This is fine but what happens if all of your machines are
powered off at the time you want to be sending them software?
Well you could run round your machines powering them all on (even if you do
ask your users to leave their machines powered on some will forget, some
will power them off just to annoy you and what about those people who aren’t
in the office?), but this isn't practical in large environments. What you
need is some way of powering your machines on so they’re ready to receive
software distributions and this is exactly what SMSWakeUp does.
SMSWakeUp is an integrated solution that works out when SMS will be
distributing software and to which machines it will be distributing the
software to. Just before SMS distributes the software SMSWakeUp sends what's
known as a 'Magic Packet' to all of the machines that are about to have
software distributed to them to make sure they're powered on and ready to receive the
software. In this way only those machines that need to be woken up
are.
SMSWakeUp offers some other great features. To find out more on SMSWakeUp
