Windows 2000 Professional Automatic Update Fails with an HTTP 404 Error

Some of my Windows 2000 Professional clients running SP3 are experiencing HTTP 404 errors.  If I go to Windows Update, it seems to take the files from my SUS server.  But if I let it check for updates, all I get is errors:

2003-05-30 17:42:26 10.0.108.125 - 10.0.101.78 80 GET /wutrack.bin
V=1&U=08e2c00b84d62e4aa416d199cb572a56&C=au&A=s&I=&D=&P=5.0.893.2.0.1.0&L=en-US&S=f&E=80190194&M=ver%3D5.4.3630.2550&X=030530174227641
200 Industry+Update+Control

Which translates to:

2003-05-30 17:42:26 10.0.108.125 AU Self-Update Failed 80190194
ver=5.4.3630.2550

a HTTP 404 error.

The Windows Update patch downloads and installs get logged to my SUS server just fine and my (Tru64-based) DNS server (with DDNS off) is working properly with the A record for my SUS server.

Any clues?

Whenever I run into problems relating to the AU client, I always visit the Windows Update Site so that I can confirm that the most current controls are downloaded. I also look at this value in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

Also, have a look at the raw IIS log for the 'selfupdate 404'. The transactions around there should provide some interesting information for you to dig into it further.
