| I’m wondering
if my clients can use DNS to connect to my SUS Servers? Contributed By:

The majority of environments are probably still running NetBIOS which your
SUS clients can use to locate your SUS servers (they’ll use the NetBIOS name
of the server such as http://MySUSServer). If this is you then you don’t
need to worry anymore.
But if you want your clients to be able to use DNS to find your SUS servers
(for example http://MySUSServer.FAQShop.com), then things get a little more
complicated as you need to configure a DNS name for your SUS server for your
clients to use to contact and download updates from the server. To configure
SUS:
- Goto the home page of your SUS Server by
typing the URL in your browser (http://<yourservername>/SUSAdmin) or from
the Start menu select click 'Programs
| Administrative Tools | Microsoft Software Update Services'.
- Click on 'Set
Options' in the navigation pane on
the left hand side to load the Set options page
- Enter the DNS name your SUS clients will
be using to contact the server in the 'Server
name:' field under the 'Specify
the name your clients use to locate this update server'
section
- Click the 'Apply'
button to apply the changes
- Check your clients can use the DNS name
to contact your SUS server using the ping command from one of your clients
