I understand that Microsoft can automatically notify me when they release new content that can be deployed via SUS but how do I get notified?

You're right that you can be notified by Microsoft whenever they release new content that can be deployed via SUS.  To be notified you need to signup for the email notification service at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/redir-email.asp

You'll receive an email with the subject:

Microsoft®_Software_Update_Services_-_content_notificati on

That will be something like the following:

Microsoft® Software Update Services - content notification
