What is an RTF File?

What is an RTF file? Page 5 of the Release Notes under 'Details links of software update packages' mentions RTF files but I can't find an explanation in any of the documentation or in the newsgroup postings on what exactly an RTF is?

From the microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs newsgroup
RTF stands (or stood) for Read This First. It was a term that was used in the Windows Update site long ago (about 3 years ago) and was a link (that said, amazingly, Read This First) that would lead to a locally cached HTM page that contained a more detailed description of the update, along with another link that lead to the KB page about the update itself. The link was changed a year or so ago to "Read More..." but the term RTF still hangs around and is used quite a bit inside Microsoft.

In the Automatic Updates SP1 binaries, the locally cached HTM page is no longer used, so the link no longer exists, but it was likely a mistake to refer to "RTF" since that's not a widely known or used term outside of the Windows Update team itself.
