Why Are Microsoft Sending Out Blank Updates?

You will have noticed early in December that a SUS Server synchronisation contained no updates.

It appears that the 'iuident.cab' file was updated, which contains a new 'iuident.txt' file dated 30-Nov-2003.

On SUS Server: "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\"
On client: "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\"

There is no approval process for the file, so it will be downloaded by each client at the next check-in cycle.

The change appears to have removed the reference to the 'akamai.net' web cache servers, which was the solution implemented to minimize the disruption caused by the Blaster worm.

This highlights the lack of information contained in the content notification emails send out by Microsoft.
