Question:

Now that Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have been released, does Microsoft have any plans to support these operating systems under ConfigMgr 2007 as Clients?

Answer:

Yes to a degree. Microsoft has just released KB 2750782 “Update adds support for Windows 8-based client computers in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2” that adds support for Windows 8 (Pro and Enterprise), and Windows Server 2012 (Standard and Enterprise), to ConfigMgr SP2 (which includes R2 and R3), which you can download from:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2750782

However, this update only supports these new OSs as being fully functional clients – you cannot use ConfigMgr 2007 Operating System Deployment (OSD), to deploy these OSs plus you cannot install a ConfigMgr Site Server or Site System Role on any version of Windows Server 2012 (you’ll need ConfigMgr 2012 SP1/ MDT to do this).

In addition ConfigMgr 2007 does not support the metered Internet connections, Always On Always Connected and Windows To Go features of Windows 8 (amongst others).

Full support for both of these OSs will be included with ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 so if you need full management of these OSs or to want to host Site Servers/ Site System roles on Windows Server 2012 you’ll need to wait for this (current ETA early 2013).
