Problem:

I know I am limited to three alphanumeric characters for a Site Code but are there any special combinations I should avoid?

Resolution:

Yes you should avoid the following MS-DOS (Disk Operating System for all those of you that never experienced life before Windows) Reserved Names:

  • AUX
  • COM
  • CON
  • LPT
  • NUL
  • PRT

These are detailed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 279868  Using reserved names as site codes in SMS 2003, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or System Center 2012 – Configuration Manager (bizarrely the article doesn’t list COM and LPT which I’ve queried with Microsoft but would suggest you don’t use anyway).

This should hopefully save you from any potential “funnies” by using these names.
